Compassion doesn't say I know how you feel - that's pity. Neither does it say I feel what you feel - that's empathy. Compassion comes from a place that understands the lack of understanding or ignorance and says simply how can I help?
When genuine compassion is present with those who have hurt our personal sense of self then we know we're making progress ( and this doesn't mean we have to be a doormat for anyone )... because the real self can never be hurt.
